Esports

The New York State 4-H Esports club fosters safe online spaces for members to connect  with peers around the state, share positive attitudes, teach healthy habits, and provide leadership opportunities. Esports, short for electronic sports, is a form of competition using video games. Through online gaming, youth can develop skills like communication, teamwork, decision making, critical thinking, goal setting, cooperation, and more. We bring in guest speakers from multiple areas of the industry to speak with youth about college opportunities, career choices, and what they do in the industry.

For youth age 13 and older

Communication

Effective communication is essential for success in both gaming and real life. Youth can learn how to communicate clearly and assertively with their teammates, coaches, and opponents.

Teamwork

Working collaboratively with others towards a common goal is an important life skill. In the esports group, youth can learn how to contribute to a team effort, share responsibility, and work through conflicts.

Strategy

Esports require strategic thinking and decision-making, which can also be applied to other areas of life. Youth can learn how to analyze situations, identify patterns, and make informed decisions.

Time management

Balancing gaming and other commitments requires good time management skills. Youth can learn how to prioritize tasks, manage their schedules, and meet deadlines.

Resilience

Esports can be challenging, and losing is a natural part of the learning process. Youth can learn how to bounce back from setbacks, stay motivated, and persevere through difficult times.

Creativity

Esports and gaming can also foster creativity and innovation. Youth can learn how to think outside the box, experiment with different approaches, and find new solutions to problems.

Sportsmanship

Winning with grace and losing with dignity is an important life skill. Youth can learn how to be gracious winners and good sports, respect their opponents, and show empathy towards others.

Leadership

Esports and gaming offer opportunities for youth to take on leadership roles, such as team captain or coach. Youth can learn how to motivate and inspire others, make decisions, and take responsibility for their actions.
